Adam Chwieśko MD PhD is one of the specialists in Europe in the diagnosis and treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD). He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical Academy in Białystok in 2001. During twelve years as a resident, junior and senior registrar at the Department of Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine of the University Clinical Hospital in Białystok, he earned his doctorate and completed specialist training in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He was also one of the first in Poland to complete an advanced course in manometry and pH monitoring with intraluminal impedance at the renowned Sandhill Scientific training centre (Denver, USA) under Prof. Donald Castell (h-index: 95), an expert in functional GERD diagnostics.

In the following years he continued to diagnose and treat patients with GERD, while pursuing his research career, publishing in international journals and taking part in medical symposia in Poland and abroad. In 2019 he became the first and only Pole to complete specialist training under the auspices of the American Foundation for Research and Education in Esophageal and Foregut Disease, led by Prof. Castell and Prof. Tom DeMeester (creator of the DeMeester score and specialist in anti-reflux surgery; h-index: 106). He later became involved in developing interdisciplinary scientific societies in the USA (American Foregut Society) and in Europe (European Foregut Society), where he is the only Polish member.

In 2025 he completed a training fellowship at a renowned centre in Japan (Digestive Disease Center, SHOWA Medical University Northern Yokohama Hospital), where under leading experts Prof. Shin-ei Kudo (h-index: 52) and Dr Masashi Misawa (h-index: 41) he studied endocytoscopy (EndoCyto), the EndoBRAIN AI system, chromoendoscopy, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), underwater EMR and laparoscopic endoscopic cooperative surgery (LECS). He then completed a one-month fellowship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, in the Department of Gastroenterology led by Dr John Pandolfino (h-index: 86), a leading expert in oesophageal motility and creator of the Chicago Classification and the Dallas consensus, learning advanced diagnostic (HRM, FLIP) and therapeutic (POEM, G-POEM) techniques for the oesophagus and stomach.

Adam Chwieśko MD PhD is an incurable optimist by nature. Professionally, he is known for his unconventional approach to medical problems and his uncompromising pragmatism. A sense of humour and an easy-going manner are his trademarks.
